Be Prepared

Before Your Appointment

Essential information to help you prepare for your notary appointment. Being prepared ensures a smooth and efficient notarization process.

Know What Type of Notarization You Need

There are 3 basic types of notarization

1 Acknowledgement

The purpose is to declare that you have willingly signed a document.

2 Jurat

The purpose is for you to swear or affirm that the contents of the document are true.

3 Copy Certification

The purpose is to have the notary confirm that the copy is an exact match of the original.

Please note: The notary is not authorized to select the type of notarization for you. If you are unaware of what type of notarization you need, contact the receiving agency/company or attorney.

Make Sure Your Document is Complete

Your document must be 100% complete for a notary to perform a notarization. To deter fraud, there should be no blank spaces on your document before you meet with the notary.

For example, an empty line for a name, critical date, or interest rate on a loan document could cause serious trouble if the information is added after the form is notarized.

Bring Acceptable Identification

Please see the information in the Requirements section for acceptable forms of identification.

All Signers Must Be Present

A signer must be face-to-face with the notary in order to have their signature notarized.

Vital Records

Documents such as birth certificates, death certificates, and marriage certificates cannot be made and/or certified by a notary. You must go to the government agency that issued the certificate, or go to the county registrar's office for a certified copy.
